How stupid was Katie, and the neighbor (in the beginning)? Why in the world would they think they knew enough to play mediator as opposed to getting her some help?! Lifetime has stupid friends in these movies, but Katie is by far one of the worst. She almost died and could have gotten her friend killed. Erin comes to stay with her and she thinks Jared trying to "redeem" himself is reason enough for her to intervene? Reasonable or acceptable? Had Katie died, I would not have cared (sorry not sorry), but since she didn't, Erin should accept her apology but put some distance in their friendship. Suzanne was a MUCH better and smarter friend, so I'm glad she was around in the end.
This actress did another movie where she played an abused wife (something about In Love with My Partner's Wife I think), and this one is better. There's also a moviei with Damon Runyan with this similar storyline that is better than both in terms of story and tension. My only thing, and I am obviously not victim shaming, but from the dialogue, there were so many red flags that were seemingly there before their whirlwind marriage. For example, her getting rid of all of her personal banking accounts? IMO, that's worse and more dangerous than his comments on her wardrobe. Jared didn't have a personality beyond being an abuser and I guess that's the result of the movie getting things going pretty quickly.
I think the scene with Jared's parents was a bit of overkill. I could tell that we're supposed to see that he gets his behavior from his father, but his mother goes back and forth btwn normal and jittery/anxious. It was weird and obvious what's being implied. She also talked a lot for someone who is "afraid" of her husband.
Some things are just too on the nose. For example, the climax where he's taunting Erin about being bigger and stronger than her, and she uses all her new self-defense knowledge on him. There's an episode of Walker Texas Ranger, where an abused woman gets help from her self defense support group after she's attacked in the woods by her husband. It was great and much more realistic.
It's worth one watch at least. It took me a couple of tries bc I fell asleep in the middle (it was a holiday so I napped). It's not too PSA-like which is appreciated.
