Objectively, we have a generic girl who's an underdog that randomly meets a guy who's a big deal, gets interested in her, and inevitably brings her to his flashy world.
We went through vampires and werewolves and rich perverse 50 shades of grey guys, now we're down to this Justin Bieber fantasy.
I kinda like how Justin.. I mean "Jordan" here is presented, though. He's a realistic person - a child pop star, popular with the dumb teens who listen to pop, exploited by his mother and the suits, being aware of the charade that his life is - personal relationships, fans, etc etc - all a publicity sham.
Female pop stars never admit this, or even worse - are contempt with it and play into it (e.g. Ariana Grande and that blonde one with the ostrich legs), but the real Justin wasn't like this, so it's good that this movie version of him is humanized, it's not some 1-bit cliché.
I think this movie's problem is that it targeted the wrong people - the aforementioned dumb teen girls who listen to pop - obviously they can't really grasp how good and real the story is because they don't know what real life is. But if you actually know a bit more about the world, you'll see that this is not a bad modern romcom at all. Most characters are really well written. Very authentic.
Of course she gets to treat him terribly and constantly put him down even though he's already very humble and nice, because this is a female-pandering romcom after all. :)
And that's where I took some points off because this is some really annoying, predictable and most importantly - unnecessary obligatory garbage.
I refuse to believe that the women this movie is pandering to are so petty that they need to see this in literally every romcom.
Oh and he gives his mom credit that "she made it all happen" even though that's not even remotely true with the real Bieber who made it happen by having a good singing voice and putting himself on YouTube, to be discovered by a talent scout - Scooter Braun. I know this isn't a documentary, even though it rips Bieber a lot, but those little changes for pandering's sake - I can't help but notice them.
Also, a bit toooooo much shaky cam for such tepid scenes. Tone it down, it's not an action movie.
Anyways, so yeah, it's a mixed bag, it has its cliché moments, by-the-books plot points, female pandering, but it's mostly very good. The people who made it had good intentions and it shows. And the characters, as well as the actors portraying them are wonderful.
