Predictable and generally without merit.
I watched until the end out of some misplaced sense of duty. I liked the cast and I really wanted the series to go someplace, to validate the time I'd already spent, to ask some new questions, to provide some fresh perspectives. The finale brought no relief, no real epiphany or resolution I couldn't have guessed halfway into the pilot. People try to explain the slow, obvious nature of this show away with words like existential, or minimalistic. I'd argue that does a disservice to existentialists, but regardless, the result is barely watchable: a story that's over before it begins. Characters so contrived they keep you waiting for the Portlandia titles to roll. Dialogue, sets and shots so curated, saturated and false you can't forget for a moment you're watching a surface-deep, blindly indie dramedy.
To those of you rating this positively, you're giving writers and executives alike an excuse to churn out rudderless, pre-digested junk.
I'm sorry Maya and Fred. I believe you did the best you could with lackluster material.
