HOW TO Perform a BACK SQUAT w/BARBELL | Cues for Safe Movements with Myles Cooper & Logan Webber
Volleyball coaches often need to assist their athletes in building strength and power off the volleyball court. However, unless the coach has a background within the field of strength and conditioning, it can be difficult to catch if their athletes are performing resistance training exercises with proper mechanics. In this new USA Volleyball series, Strength 101, Myles Cooper, Head Athletic Performance Coach for the BNTs, and Logan Webber, Men’s Beach NT Member, assist coaches and athletes in understanding how to properly execute a variety of foundational resistance training exercises. In this video, the spotlight is on the back squat with a barbell, a squat variation that allows athletes to lift heavier loads. Myles and Logan demonstrate cues for the correct execution, with special attention to the hand placement and where the barbell sits on the shoulder, and common mistakes that can jeopardize safety. Cooper offers slight variations of the movement in the case of ankle range of motion issues. The video ends with a short explanation of common technical cue terms, neutral spine and tripod of the foot, that are used within the explanation of this exercise. 0:00 – Introduction 1:40 – When to Use the Back Squat in Training 2:55 – Bar Placement and Setup 4:10 – Step-by-Step Movement Breakdown 5:40 – Demonstration of Proper Form 9:55 – Building Strength Through Progressive Loading 11:15 – Key Takeaways
