It's a great shame that so many of the reviewers are so woeful about this film. For me, the film was quite wonderful and one that I would most definitely recommend to all. If you have not read the book, that's fine – just loose yourself in the film and don't worry about those virtuous bookworms. At the end of the day – it's a film and not an 800-page book. As a film, it is quite entertaining and stands as its own.
For those of you who like to loose themselves in motion pictures, then this is for you: the actors perform well, the scenes are beautifully crafted and of course the story is compelling.
And for those bookworms: films are not books and you'll never really capture the same story, it's just an interpretation. Put the film on, grab a bag of popcorn and just enjoy it for what it is. A GOOD FILM.
