***WATCHALONG WITH BRANDON & GENE AT THIS LINK*** https://rumble.com/v7cjjvi-rwr-ecw-podcast-ep.-5-5493-paul-e.-dangerously-arrives.html On Episode #5 of the Retro Wrestling Re-View ECW Podcast, Gene Jackson and Brandon Wheeler are back with another look at the earliest days of Eastern Championship Wrestling, and this week feels like a pretty important step forward. The crowd may still be thin, the presentation may still be rough, and Sandman may still be wearing that profoundly uncomfortable surfing outfit, but ECW is starting to feel like it has direction. Most importantly, Paul E. Dangerously has arrived, and that changes the entire temperature of the show. This episode features two title matches, a on-location promo that only Terry Funk could pull off, the continued rise of Hot Stuff International, a major ECW debut from Paul E. Dangerously, and another round of early-90s Philadelphia wrestling oddities that give Gene and Brandon plenty to talk about. The biggest moment this week is the arrival of Paul E. Dangerously. It’s not the Paul Heyman version of ECW yet, but you can already see the seeds being planted. Gene and Brandon spend time discussing how Paul enters as a manager and backstage helper, but how history tells us this is the beginning of something much larger. Episode #5 feels like a turning point. The show is still small. The building is not full. The production is still awkward. But the pieces are starting to line up. Eddie Gilbert has a real top heel group, Paul E. Dangerously is in the building, the title picture has movement, and ECW is starting to feel less like a random local wrestling show and more like a promotion slowly figuring itself out. It is still Eastern Championship Wrestling. But for the first time, you can start to see the road that leads to Extreme. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (https://www.patreon.com/retrowrestlingarchive)
