The dual began at 157, where Matt Anderson of Iowa got things started for the Hawkeyes with his 6-2 victory over Matt Veach, one of many new faces in this storied rivalry. Anderson began the scoring in the first period by finishing a low ankle-pick near the edge of the mat for a 2-0 lead. Anderson established control in the second period, though. When Veach chose to begin the period in the bottom position, Anderson rode him for over half of the period. Anderson then scored two more points on a double-leg takedown in the second period to extend his lead to 5-1. He would be awarded one more point for riding time.
